Cocoa Beach is the definitive Florida beach experience โ relaxed, sun-drenched, slightly quirky, and impossibly convenient to some of the most unique attractions in the world. An hour east of Disney, minutes from NASA, and sitting right on the Atlantic Ocean, Cocoa Beach manages to be simultaneously a classic Florida beach town and one of the most interesting places in the state.
Getting to Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is located on a barrier island 60 miles east of Orlando International Airport. The drive via SR-528 (Beachline Expressway) takes approximately 60 minutes from MCO in normal traffic. The beach town is compact enough to walk once you're there โ but parking, especially on weekends and during cruise days, can be challenging near the pier and Ron Jon area.
Ron Jon Surf Shop
Possibly the most famous surf shop on Earth, Ron Jon has been in Cocoa Beach since 1963. The two-story, 52,000-square-foot store is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year โ including Christmas. It sells surfboards, wetsuits, beach gear, swimwear, and an impressive selection of Florida Space Coast merchandise. Even if you're not in the market for a surfboard, walking through Ron Jon is part of the Cocoa Beach experience.
Cocoa Beach Pier
The 800-foot wooden pier stretching over the Atlantic is the social center of Cocoa Beach. Several restaurants and bars line the pier, including the famous Rikki Tiki Tavern at the end. Surfing competitions are held here regularly, and the pier deck becomes an impromptu community gathering spot during rocket launches.
๐ Best Time to Visit: The pier at sunset on a clear day is one of Florida's great free experiences. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset, get a cold drink, and watch the sky turn. No charge to walk on the pier.
Best Beaches in Cocoa Beach
The beach itself stretches the entire length of the barrier island. The area near the pier is the most populated and has lifeguards in season. For a quieter experience, drive a few miles north or south โ the beach quality is equally good and crowds thin significantly.
