Most Space Coast visitors follow a predictable path: Port Canaveral โ Kennedy Space Center โ Cocoa Beach. It's a great path. But Florida's Space Coast contains extraordinary hidden gems that even longtime Florida residents haven't experienced. Here are ten of the best.
1. Black Point Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island
A 7-mile, one-way loop through the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge โ driveable in a regular vehicle โ that passes through marshes, impoundments, and scrub habitat teeming with wildlife. Arrive at sunrise for low light and active birds. Roseate spoonbills, bald eagles, alligators sunning on the banks, and (in winter) huge rafts of migratory ducks are routine sights. Free. No lines. Almost no tourists.
2. Canaveral National Seashore's Apollo Beach
While Playalinda Beach (south end) gets attention for launch viewing, Apollo Beach on the north end near New Smyrna is completely different โ and stunning. Miles of completely undeveloped barrier island beach, sea turtle nesting activity, and the ruins of a Seminole War-era sugar plantation at Eldora are accessible by kayak from here. In summer, sea turtle nesting and hatching is extraordinary.
3. Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, Titusville
One of the most underrated aviation museums in the Southeast. A massive collection of fully restored WWII and Korean War aircraft, actually flown regularly. The annual Thunder Over Titusville airshow (March) is spectacular and draws major warbirds from across the country. Admission is surprisingly affordable.
๐ฉ๏ธ Local Secret: The Valiant Air Command Museum holds the largest collection of flying WWII aircraft in the world. It's genuinely world-class and completely under the radar for most visitors.
4. Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary, Merritt Island
A small, free wildlife sanctuary on Sykes Creek in the middle of Merritt Island. A boardwalk trail through mangroves and hammock forest, excellent manatee sightings in cooler months, and an atmosphere of complete seclusion just minutes from the NASA causeway. Almost no one knows about this place.
5. Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant, Titusville
A Titusville institution since 1983. Enormous portions of fresh rock shrimp, grouper, and Florida seafood at very reasonable prices. The lines on weekends are real โ arrive early. Ask for the rock shrimp, which is a local specialty not widely available outside the Space Coast area.
6. Eau Gallie Arts District, Melbourne
Melbourne's artistic neighborhood is experiencing a genuine renaissance โ independent galleries, craft breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and boutiques in historic 1920s buildings. The contrast with typical Florida tourist destinations is refreshing. Saturday mornings have a farmers market worth exploring.
7. Jetty Park After Dark (On Launch Night)
Everyone knows Jetty Park for fishing and the beach. What few outsiders realize: on nighttime launch nights, Jetty Park transforms into one of the most electric public spaces in Florida. Hundreds of spectators gather, the water reflects the launch plume, and the experience of a Falcon 9 rising over the port at night โ with the cruise ships lit up in the background โ is unforgettable.
8. Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
One of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the western hemisphere, stretching along Melbourne Beach and Brevard County's south coast. From late May through October, loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles come ashore nightly to nest. Brevard Zoo and several organizations offer guided nighttime turtle walks during nesting season. Book early โ these sell out.
9. Exploration Tower, Port Canaveral
A 7-story observation tower directly at the cruise port that most cruise passengers walk right past. Exhibits on the port's history and ecology, 360ยฐ views of the port, cruise ships, the Atlantic, and the launch pads in the distance. On a clear day with a ship departing below you, it's remarkable. Very affordable and very uncrowded.
10. Manatee Observation at the Power Plant, Titusville
Florida Power & Light's Titusville plant discharges warm water into the Indian River, attracting large congregations of West Indian manatees in cooler months (typically November through March). A free public observation deck provides views of dozens of manatees โ sometimes over 100 โ congregating in the warm outflow. This is genuinely one of the easiest manatee-viewing spots in Florida.
