Route Overview

Starting at Clearwater Beach, the drive follows Alternate US-19 and local roads north through Dunedin, where you can stop at craft breweries and the Pinellas Trail. Continue through Palm Harbor and Ozona before arriving at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. The route hugs the coast with occasional Gulf views and passes through some of Pinellas County's most charming communities.

Stops Along the Way

1. Clearwater Beach and Pier 60

Start at Clearwater Beach, consistently ranked among America's best beaches. Pier 60 hosts nightly sunset celebrations with street performers, artists, and breathtaking Gulf sunsets.

2. Honeymoon Island State Park

A barrier island state park with pristine Gulf beaches, nature trails through virgin slash pine forest, and osprey nesting colonies. The ferry to Caladesi Island departs from here.

3. Downtown Dunedin

A Scottish-heritage downtown with Florida's oldest craft brewery (Dunedin Brewery), excellent restaurants, art galleries, and the Pinellas Trail running through the heart of town.

4. Wall Springs Park

A Palm Harbor park with a spring-fed creek, nature trails, a historic observation tower, and waterfront views of St. Joseph Sound. Great for birdwatching and a peaceful walk.

5. Fred Howard Park

A Tarpon Springs park with a mile-long causeway leading to a Gulf beach island. The causeway is popular for fishing and the beach has calm, shallow waters perfect for families.

6. Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks

End at the historic Sponge Docks, a waterfront district where Greek sponge divers settled over a century ago. Enjoy authentic Greek restaurants, bakeries with fresh baklava, sponge boat tours, and working sponge warehouses.

Driving Tips

  • Clearwater Beach traffic is heavy on weekends and holidays - plan to leave before 9 AM or after 3 PM
  • Alternate US-19 north of Dunedin is a pleasant drive through residential areas with less traffic than US-19
  • The Sponge Docks can be crowded on weekends - go for a weekday lunch for the best experience
  • Try the authentic Greek food at Hellas Restaurant, Mykonos, or Mr. Souvlaki on the Sponge Docks
