The Green Mountain Scenic Byway winds through the rolling terrain of west Orange County near the town of Montverde. This area features some of the highest elevations in Central Florida, lush pastureland, horse farms, and beautiful lake views. The byway is a hidden gem that most visitors and even many locals have never discovered, offering a pastoral landscape that feels more like the Carolinas than Florida.
Route Overview
The byway follows County Road 455 and local roads through the hills around Montverde and Ferndale. The route passes by Lake Apopka, through wooded hillsides, past horse farms, and along the shores of several scenic lakes. The elevation changes are the most dramatic in the Orlando metro area.
Stops Along the Way
1. Montverde
A tiny hilltop town with a historic school campus (Montverde Academy, founded 1912), country charm, and views across the surrounding countryside. The town's name means green mountain in French.
2. Lake Apopka Scenic Overlook
Views of Lake Apopka, one of the largest lakes in Florida, from the elevated terrain along the byway. The lake is being restored to ecological health and attracts thousands of birds.
3. Ferndale Preserve
A scenic preserve with hiking trails through rolling hills, scrub habitat, and hardwood hammock. The terrain here is remarkably hilly for Florida, with elevation changes of over 100 feet.
4. Oakland Nature Preserve
At the eastern end of the byway area, this preserve offers boardwalks through cypress swamp along the shore of Lake Apopka. An excellent spot for birdwatching and nature photography.
Driving Tips
- The roads are narrow and winding through the hills - maintain a moderate speed
- No gas stations or convenience stores along the byway - fill up before you start
- Horse riders and cyclists share the road in this rural area - pass carefully
- Fog can settle in the low areas on cool mornings, especially near the lakes
