Route Overview

Starting in Melbourne, the route follows US-1 and Indian River Drive north through Rockledge, Cocoa, and into Titusville. Along the way, you pass historic homes, waterfront parks, and small fishing communities. The lagoon is visible for much of the drive, and pullouts allow for wildlife viewing and photography.

Stops Along the Way

1. Downtown Melbourne and Crane Creek Promenade

Start in Historic Downtown Melbourne's walkable district with restaurants, art galleries, and the Crane Creek Promenade along the waterfront. The creek is a popular manatee viewing spot.

2. Brevard Zoo

An award-winning zoo with over 900 animals and unique kayaking through animal habitats. The Treetop Trek features ziplines and aerial adventures above the zoo grounds.

3. Historic Cocoa Village

A charming riverside district with over 60 shops, restaurants, and galleries housed in restored historic buildings. The Cocoa Village Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating theater in Florida.

4. Indian River Drive

The most scenic section of the byway follows Indian River Drive along the western shore of the lagoon. Massive live oaks, historic homes, and water views make this a quintessential Old Florida experience.

5. Parrish Park and Marina

A waterfront park in Titusville with a marina, boat ramps, and picnic areas. Views across the Indian River to Kennedy Space Center make this one of the best free rocket launch viewing spots in the area.

6. Titusville Historic Downtown

End in downtown Titusville with its murals, craft breweries, and the Playalinda Brewing Company. The US Space Walk of Fame is along the waterfront.

Driving Tips

  • Indian River Drive is a narrow two-lane road with a 30-35 mph speed limit - perfect for sightseeing
  • Pull over at waterfront pullouts to scan for manatees and dolphins in the lagoon
  • Avoid US-1 during rush hour - take Indian River Drive instead for a more scenic and less congested route
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching along the lagoon shoreline
