Lake Wales Ridge
The Lake Wales Ridge is an ancient geological formation running through Central Florida from Clermont south to Venus. This sandy ridge was once an island chain during higher sea levels and now supports some of the rarest plant communities in the world. The drive along the ridge passes through citrus groves, scrub preserves, and small towns that time forgot, offering a landscape unlike anywhere else in Florida.
Route Overview
The route follows US-27 and local roads along the spine of the Lake Wales Ridge from Clermont south through Haines City, Lake Wales, Frostproof, and Avon Park. Along the way, the terrain rises and falls through citrus hills, scrub preserves, and lake-dotted landscapes. The ridge is the backbone of Florida's citrus industry and a biodiversity hotspot.
Stops Along the Way
1. Citrus Tower
A 226-foot observation tower in Clermont built in 1956 to overlook the citrus groves of the Ridge. While many groves have been replaced by development, the tower still offers panoramic views of the rolling hill country.
2. Lake Louisa State Park
A beautiful state park with swimming, kayaking, and hiking trails through the rolling sandhill terrain. The park protects three lakes and features one of the most scenic camping areas in Central Florida.
3. Tiger Creek Preserve
A Nature Conservancy preserve protecting one of the best remaining examples of Florida scrub habitat. Hiking trails wind through ancient sand pine scrub with views of Tiger Creek ravine.
4. Bok Tower Gardens
The most famous landmark on the Lake Wales Ridge. The 205-foot Singing Tower sits atop Iron Mountain at 298 feet above sea level, surrounded by 250 acres of gardens and nature preserve.
5. Frostproof Historical Museum
A small-town museum telling the story of the citrus industry and the people who built the Ridge communities. The name Frostproof was a marketing claim by early citrus growers.
6. Archbold Biological Station
A world-renowned research station and nature preserve near Venus. The station studies Florida scrub ecology and offers occasional public tours and educational programs.
Driving Tips
- US-27 is a busy four-lane highway - the scenic portions are on the smaller roads branching off the main route
- Citrus groves are private property - enjoy the views from the road but do not enter without permission
- Many ridge preserves have sandy trails - wear sturdy shoes and bring water
- The ridge is hotter and drier than coastal areas - bring extra sun protection and hydration
- Spring brings orange blossom season (March through April) when the air is incredibly fragrant
