About EPCOT
EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) is Walt Disney World's second theme park, spanning 305 acres. Originally envisioned by Walt Disney as a real working city, the park instead became a showcase of technology, innovation, and world cultures. EPCOT is divided into four neighborhoods: World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature, and World Showcase.
History of EPCOT
EPCOT opened on October 1, 1982, as the second Walt Disney World theme park. Walt Disney originally envisioned EPCOT as a real, functioning city of the future where 20,000 residents would live and work. After his death in 1966, the concept was reimagined as a permanent world's fair. The park has undergone massive transformation since 2019, with new attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and a reimagined entrance area replacing the aging Future World concept.

Insider Tips
- Enter through the International Gateway (back entrance near France) if staying at a nearby Disney resort to skip the main entrance crowds
- EPCOT festivals (Food and Wine, Flower and Garden, Festival of the Arts, Festival of the Holidays) add dozens of food and drink booths - plan your visit around them
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind uses a virtual queue - join at 7 AM or 1 PM sharp for a boarding group
- World Showcase opens at 11 AM, two hours after the rest of the park - ride the big attractions first
- Drinking Around the World (one drink per country pavilion) is a popular adult tradition but pace yourself across 11 countries
- The France pavilion bakery, Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie, serves the best pastries in all of Walt Disney World
Best Times to Visit
EPCOT is least crowded on weekdays outside of festival periods and holidays. Mid-January through mid-February and September weekdays offer the shortest wait times. The park gets significantly busier during Food and Wine Festival (late August through November) and during spring break weeks.
