About Gatorland
Gatorland is a 110-acre wildlife preserve and theme park known as the Alligator Capital of the World. Home to thousands of alligators and crocodiles, the park has been a Florida institution since 1949. The iconic giant alligator mouth entrance is one of the most photographed landmarks in Orlando. The park offers a more authentic, old-Florida experience compared to the mega theme parks.
History of Gatorland
Gatorland was founded by Owen Godwin in 1949 as the Florida Wildlife Institute, starting with just a handful of alligators and a roadside stand. The iconic giant gator mouth entrance was built in 1962 and has become one of the most recognized landmarks in Orlando. The park survived a devastating fire in 2006 that destroyed the main building but was rebuilt and reopened. Gatorland remains family-owned and operated to this day, now in its third generation.
