History of Universal's Volcano Bay

Universal's Volcano Bay opened on May 25, 2017, replacing the aging Wet 'n Wild water park (which Universal had acquired in 1998). The park was designed as a water theme park rather than a traditional water park, with elaborate theming and storytelling woven throughout. The TapuTapu technology was a first-of-its-kind virtual queue system for water parks.

Park Areas & Lands

🌋 Krakatau

The centerpiece of the park - a 200-foot volcano housing the signature Krakatau Aqua Coaster and the dramatic Ko'okiri Body Plunge drop slide.

🌊 Waturi Beach

The main beach area featuring a multi-directional wave pool and the park's largest sandy beach.

🌺 Rainforest Village

Lush tropical theming with a variety of slide complexes and a winding river.

âš¡ River Village

Family-friendly area with gentler attractions and a kids' play area.

Must-Do Attractions

  • Krakatau Aqua Coaster - A water coaster using linear induction motor technology to propel four-person canoes uphill through the volcano
  • Ko'okiri Body Plunge - A 125-foot, 70-degree drop slide through a trap door - one of the most terrifying water slides in Florida
  • Honu and Honu ika Moana - Two multi-person raft slides with massive half-pipe-style walls that send riders soaring
  • Maku and Puhi - Two massive round raft slides - one is an open bowl and one is an enclosed tube - both offering intense spinning action
  • TeAwa The Fearless River - An intense whitewater rapid-style lazy river - much more thrilling than a typical lazy river experience

Insider Tips

  • TapuTapu wristbands let you tap into a virtual queue and explore the park while waiting - use it strategically for popular slides
  • Arrive at park opening to experience the most popular slides (Krakatau Aqua Coaster, Ko'okiri Body Plunge) before virtual wait times get long
  • Premium seating options include private cabanas ($200+) and padded loungers ($30+) - reserve in advance on busy days
  • The park closes early compared to other Universal parks - plan for a half-day or full-day visit accordingly
  • Volcano Bay is included in certain Universal annual pass tiers and multi-park tickets

Best Times to Visit

Volcano Bay is least crowded on weekdays during the school year (September through May, excluding holidays). Summer weekends see the highest attendance. The park occasionally closes early or reaches capacity on peak days. Morning hours offer the shortest virtual wait times.

Tickets & Pricing

Single-day tickets start at $80 for adults and $75 for children. Multi-park tickets including Volcano Bay offer savings. Universal annual passes may include Volcano Bay access depending on the tier.
