What ADA Accessible Transportation Means

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that transportation services provide equal access to individuals with disabilities. For charter bus and minibus rentals, this means providing vehicles equipped with features that allow passengers who use wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and other mobility devices to board, ride, and exit the vehicle safely and with dignity.

At BusBrother, ADA accessibility is not an afterthought or an add-on service. We believe group transportation should include every single member of your group. When you are planning a church outing, a corporate event, a wedding, a school trip, or a family reunion, no one should have to take a separate vehicle or stay behind because of a mobility limitation.

We work with carriers across Florida who maintain ADA-compliant vehicles and drivers trained in accessibility assistance. When you request an ADA accessible vehicle through BusBrother, we match your group with a vehicle that meets your specific accessibility needs - at no additional charge when available.

Our ADA Accessible Fleet

BusBrother's carrier network includes multiple types of ADA accessible vehicles to match different group sizes and accessibility requirements. Here is what is available:

Wheelchair Lift-Equipped Motorcoaches

Full-size motorcoaches (47 to 56 passengers) equipped with hydraulic wheelchair lifts. These lifts are built into the side of the coach and can accommodate most manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. Once on board, wheelchair passengers are secured in designated positions using four-point securement systems that keep the chair stable and safe during the ride. These coaches also include all standard amenities - air conditioning, reclining seats, overhead storage, restroom, and entertainment system.

ADA-Compliant Minibuses

Smaller vehicles (18 to 35 passengers) with ramp or lift access, wider aisles for wheelchair passage, and lower entry steps for passengers with limited mobility who do not use a wheelchair but have difficulty climbing standard bus steps. Minibuses are ideal for smaller groups, shorter trips, and situations where a full-size motorcoach is not needed.

Kneeling Buses

Some vehicles in our network are equipped with air suspension systems that allow the bus to "kneel" - lowering the entry door to curb height. This eliminates the step-up required to board, making it much easier for passengers using canes, walkers, or those with knee or hip limitations to get on and off the bus safely.

Flexible Seating Configurations

Many of our accessible vehicles feature removable seats in the wheelchair securement area. This means that if your group includes multiple wheelchair users, the vehicle can be configured to accommodate two, three, or even four wheelchairs depending on the vehicle size. The remaining seats are available for ambulatory passengers in your group.

How to Request ADA Accessible Service

Requesting an ADA accessible vehicle through BusBrother follows the same simple process as any booking, with one additional step on the quote form.

Step 1: Submit Your Quote Request

Visit our quote request form and fill in your trip details - pickup location, destination, date, time, and group size. On the form, check the "ADA Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle" checkbox to let us know you need an accessible vehicle.

Step 2: Include Accessibility Details

In the notes field on the form, please include as much detail as possible about your accessibility needs. This helps us match you with the right vehicle. Useful information includes:

  • Number of wheelchair users in your group
  • Type of mobility device (manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, mobility scooter, walker)
  • Weight of power wheelchairs or scooters (some lifts have weight limits)
  • Whether any passengers need assistance boarding (driver will help)
  • Service animal accommodations needed
  • Any other accessibility requirements specific to your group

Step 3: Receive Your Custom Quote

Within two hours, you will receive a custom quote that includes an ADA accessible vehicle matched to your specific needs. The quote includes the total price, vehicle details, and a secure Square payment link to confirm your booking.

Step 4: Pay and Confirm

Click the secure payment link, complete your payment through Square, and your accessible trip is booked. You will receive a confirmation email with all trip details.

Step 5: Trip Day

Your driver arrives 15 minutes early with the accessible vehicle ready. The driver is trained in wheelchair securement and will assist passengers with boarding, securing mobility devices, and exiting the vehicle at the destination.

Types of Mobility Devices We Accommodate

  • Manual wheelchairs - Standard folding and rigid frame wheelchairs of all sizes
  • Power wheelchairs - Electric wheelchairs including larger models (please provide approximate weight in your request)
  • Mobility scooters - Three-wheel and four-wheel scooters that fit within standard lift dimensions
  • Walkers and rollators - Stored in luggage compartments or on board near the passenger
  • Canes and crutches - Passengers may board with canes or crutches and store them at their seat
  • Other assistive devices - Oxygen equipment, portable ramps, transfer boards, and other medical equipment can be accommodated with advance notice

Power wheelchair weight limits: Most wheelchair lifts accommodate devices up to 600 to 800 pounds (including the passenger). If your power wheelchair or scooter is particularly heavy, please mention the approximate weight in your quote request so we can confirm the lift capacity of the assigned vehicle.

Service Animal Policy

BusBrother and all carriers in our network welcome service animals on board every vehicle at no additional charge. Under the ADA, a service animal is a dog (or in some cases a miniature horse) that has been individually trained to perform tasks or do work for a person with a disability.

When traveling with a service animal, please let us know in your quote request so the driver is informed. Service animals should remain with their handler throughout the trip. No documentation or certification is required for service animals - we follow federal ADA guidelines.

Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy animals are not considered service animals under the ADA. However, if you have questions about traveling with any type of animal, please contact us and we will do our best to work with you.

ADA Compliance Standards We Require

Every carrier in the BusBrother network that provides ADA accessible vehicles must meet these standards:

  • ADA Title III compliance - Private transportation providers must make reasonable modifications to policies and practices to serve passengers with disabilities
  • Wheelchair securement training - All drivers assigned to accessible vehicles are trained in proper wheelchair tie-down and securement procedures
  • Lift and ramp maintenance - Wheelchair lifts and ramps are inspected and maintained as part of the vehicle's regular maintenance schedule
  • No additional charges - Carriers may not charge extra for providing accessible service when an accessible vehicle is available
  • Passenger assistance - Drivers are expected to assist passengers with boarding, alighting, and securement as needed
  • Accessible boarding locations - We work with you to identify boarding locations that provide level ground, adequate space for lift deployment, and curb access

Frequently Asked Questions About Accessible Bus Rental

Is there an extra charge for an ADA accessible vehicle?

No. When an ADA accessible vehicle is available for your trip, there is no additional charge compared to a non-accessible vehicle of the same size. ADA accessibility is a standard service, not a premium add-on.

How far in advance should I book an accessible vehicle?

We recommend booking ADA accessible vehicles at least two to three weeks in advance. Accessible vehicles are in higher demand and lower supply than standard vehicles, so earlier booking gives us the best chance of matching you with the right vehicle. For peak season travel (October through April), consider booking even earlier.

Can the driver help passengers board and exit the vehicle?

Yes. All drivers assigned to accessible vehicles are trained to assist passengers with boarding, operating the wheelchair lift or ramp, securing wheelchairs and mobility devices, and assisting with exiting the vehicle. If any passengers in your group need additional assistance beyond what the driver can provide, we recommend having a caregiver or group member available to help.

What if my wheelchair does not fit the lift?

Most standard wheelchair lifts accommodate chairs up to 30 inches wide and 48 inches long, with weight capacities of 600 to 800 pounds. If your wheelchair or scooter is larger than standard dimensions, please include the measurements in your quote request and we will confirm compatibility before assigning a vehicle. In rare cases, a different vehicle type may be recommended.

Can I bring a wheelchair and still sit in a regular seat?

Yes. If a passenger can transfer from their wheelchair to a regular bus seat, the wheelchair can be folded (if manual) and stored in the luggage compartment, or secured in the designated wheelchair area on board. The driver will assist with this as needed.
