Seminole History
The Seminole Tribe of Florida descends from Creek and other southeastern Native American peoples who migrated to Florida in the 1700s. The Seminoles are the only Native American tribe that never signed a formal peace treaty with the United States. They survived three wars with the US government by retreating into the Everglades wilderness, earning them the nickname the Unconquered People.
Cultural Sites
The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum on the Big Cypress Reservation in Clewiston is the premier Seminole cultural institution, featuring exhibits on Seminole history, a living village, and a one-mile boardwalk through a cypress swamp. The Okalee Trading Post and Museum in Hollywood, Florida, also showcases Seminole history and art.
Seminole Hard Rock
The Seminole Tribe operates the Seminole Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, Florida. The Tampa location features a guitar-shaped hotel tower and is one of the largest casinos in the eastern United States. The tribe's business enterprises generate significant economic activity and fund tribal services and cultural preservation.
