Florida has more major airports than any other state in the country, and choosing the right one can save your group hours and hundreds of dollars. This guide compares all six major Florida airports, explains which to fly into for different destinations, and walks through the logistics of group airport pickup, flight delay handling, and combo transfers for cruise passengers and hotel groups.
Florida's Six Major Airports Compared
Florida airports span from the panhandle to Miami, with six major passenger hubs serving different regions.
Orlando International (MCO)
The busiest airport in Florida and the seventh busiest in the US. MCO serves all major domestic carriers plus significant international traffic from Europe and South America. Best for Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Port Canaveral cruises, and central Florida destinations.
- 45 minutes from Walt Disney World
- 45 to 60 minutes from Port Canaveral
- 2 hours from Tampa
- 3 hours from Fort Lauderdale or Miami
- Terminal layout: Terminals A, B, and C (new in 2022)
Tampa International (TPA)
Florida's second busiest airport, consistently rated among the most passenger friendly in the country. Serves Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater, and Gulf Coast destinations. Also the closest airport to Port Tampa Bay.
- 15 minutes to Port Tampa Bay
- 20 minutes to downtown Tampa
- 30 to 45 minutes to Clearwater Beach
- 90 minutes to Orlando
- 2 hours to Sarasota
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL)
Third busiest Florida airport and the primary gateway for Fort Lauderdale, Port Everglades cruises, and the Broward County area. Often cheaper than Miami International for the same South Florida destinations.
- 15 minutes to Port Everglades
- 30 minutes to Miami Beach
- 45 minutes to Port Miami
- 1 hour to Boca Raton
- 90 minutes to West Palm Beach
Orlando Sanford International (SFB)
Orlando's secondary airport, served primarily by Allegiant and some international charter carriers. Smaller terminal, faster in and out, and often cheaper fares. Located 45 minutes north of MCO.
- 45 minutes from Walt Disney World
- 1 hour from Port Canaveral
- Much smaller crowds than MCO
- Allegiant hub with low cost destinations
Palm Beach International (PBI)
The primary airport for Palm Beach County, Boca Raton, and northern Broward County destinations. Smaller and easier to navigate than Fort Lauderdale or Miami, making it popular for luxury resort travelers.
- 15 minutes to Palm Beach
- 30 minutes to Boca Raton
- 1 hour to Fort Lauderdale
- 90 minutes to Miami
Daytona Beach International (DAB)
The smallest of the major Florida airports, serving Daytona Beach, New Smyrna, and the Space Coast north of Cocoa. Limited carriers but fast in and out.
- 15 minutes to Daytona Beach
- 60 minutes to Kennedy Space Center
- 1 hour 15 minutes to Orlando
- 45 minutes to Port Canaveral
Which Airport for Which Destination
Choosing the right airport can save your group significant time and money.
For Walt Disney World
MCO is the default but SFB is a smart alternative if Allegiant serves your home city. Drive time is similar (45 minutes to Disney), fares are often 30 to 40 percent cheaper, and the terminal crowds are much smaller.
For Port Canaveral Cruises
MCO is the closest major airport. Only consider DAB if flight schedules align specifically for your cruise line. See our cruise ports page for full detail.
For Port Everglades Cruises
FLL is closest (15 minutes). Miami International is 45 minutes away and usually more expensive. West Palm Beach (PBI) is a 90 minute drive but sometimes has better fares.
For Tampa Bay
TPA is the only reasonable option. The next closest is MCO at 90 minutes to 2 hours.
For Miami
Both FLL and MIA work. FLL is often 20 to 40 percent cheaper on fares. Drive time from FLL to Miami Beach is about 30 to 45 minutes.
Group Airport Pickup Procedures
Picking up 20+ people from a Florida airport requires a specific workflow to avoid chaos.
Meet and Greet Service
For groups, we offer baggage claim meet and greet where the driver (in uniform with a name sign) meets the group inside baggage claim, assists with luggage, and escorts everyone to the staged vehicle. This service is included on group bookings of 10 or more.
Curbside Pickup
For smaller groups, curbside pickup on the arrivals level works. The driver texts the lead coordinator when the group is within 15 minutes of the door. Florida airports actively enforce short wait times at arrivals, so timing matters.
Name Sign Conventions
Every group pickup has a laminated name sign with the lead traveler's name and company or group name. The sign is visible at baggage claim and stays with the driver the whole trip.
Luggage Handling
- One standard suitcase per passenger fits in the under coach luggage bay
- Oversize bags (golf clubs, surfboards) need advance notice
- Carry ons go in overhead storage on the coach
- Drivers assist with loading for elderly and families
Flight Delay Handling
Florida weather and air traffic delays are a regular occurrence. Our flight tracking system is built to handle them.
Real Time Flight Tracking
Every airport booking is automatically linked to the inbound flight number. Our dispatch system monitors FAA and airline data and shifts the pickup time automatically if the flight is delayed. No client phone call required.
Wait Time Policy
For standard airport pickups, we include 60 minutes of free wait time from the scheduled landing. Longer delays may incur a wait time charge, which we communicate in advance.
Cancelled Flight Rebooking
If your flight cancels and you rebook for the next day, we can typically shift the pickup at no additional charge. Contact us as soon as you know the new arrival time.
Missed Flight Protocol
If a passenger misses the flight but the rest of the group arrives, we proceed on schedule and coordinate a follow up pickup for the late arrival. This is common for large groups.
How Far in Advance to Book
Florida airport transfer timing depends on season and group size.
Peak Season (October to April)
- Large groups (30+ passengers): book 60 to 90 days in advance
- Medium groups (15 to 30): 30 to 45 days
- Small groups (under 15): 2 to 4 weeks
- Cruise day combo transfers: 30+ days
Off Season (May to September)
- Large groups: 30 to 45 days
- Medium groups: 2 to 3 weeks
- Small groups: 1 to 2 weeks
- Last minute availability common for under 15 passengers
Cruise Plus Airport Combo Transfers
One of the most common bookings we handle is a combined airport to cruise port transfer. This is how it works.
Typical Combo Route
MCO to Port Canaveral is a 45 minute direct drive. The driver meets the group at baggage claim, loads luggage, and drives directly to the cruise terminal. No hotel stop, no extra transfers. This is often cheaper than a hotel night plus two separate transfers.
When a Hotel Night Makes Sense
If your flight arrives after 3 pm, a pre cruise hotel night is worth the extra cost. Cruise boarding closes at 3:30 to 4 pm typically, so late afternoon arrivals are too risky for same day port transfer.
Post Cruise Airport Return
Cruise disembarkation runs between 7 and 10 am. Book your return flight for after 12 pm on MCO flights and after 1 pm for FLL flights to allow buffer for traffic. See our cruise lines page for specific line timing.
Hotel Plus Airport Coordination
Many conference and wedding groups combine airport transfers with hotel shuttle service.
Single Day Arrival
On arrival day, we run airport to hotel shuttles in waves aligned with flight arrival times. A typical conference might have 200 attendees arriving on 15 different flights, which we consolidate into 4 to 6 shuttle runs.
Multi Hotel Coordination
For large conferences with attendees split across 3 to 5 hotels, we run dedicated shuttles per hotel block or a loop that hits each in sequence. Your event coordinator plans this in advance.
Departure Day
Departure day is trickier because flights leave all day. We schedule multiple shuttle waves from each hotel aligned with flight timing, typically 3.5 hours before domestic flights and 4.5 hours before international.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can you track my flight and adjust pickup automatically?
Yes. Every airport booking includes real time flight tracking. Your pickup adjusts automatically if the flight is delayed.
2. What happens if my luggage is lost?
The driver will wait up to 60 minutes free while you file a report with the airline. If the wait exceeds 60 minutes, we work with you on options.
3. Can one bus pick up from multiple flights arriving at different times?
Yes, but only if the arrival times are within a 90 minute window. Otherwise two waves are more efficient.
4. Do you charge extra for early morning or late night airport pickups?
Pickups between 10 pm and 6 am may include a small overnight surcharge. This is disclosed during the quote on our pricing page.
5. Can you coordinate luggage between airport and cruise port?
Yes. The driver loads luggage at the airport and unloads at the cruise terminal. Porters at the cruise terminal then transfer bags to your cabin.
6. Do you offer ADA accessible airport transfers?
Yes. We have ADA compliant vehicles with lifts for every Florida airport. No extra charge. See our accessibility page.
