Why Central Florida for Birding

Central Florida is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in North America thanks to its diverse habitats, mild climate, and mix of resident and migratory species. Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Florida. The Space Coast, in particular, is internationally recognized for birding, hosting the annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival.

Top Birding Locations

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is the top birding spot with over 330 species recorded. The Black Point Wildlife Drive and BioLab Road are must-visit areas. Orlando Wetlands Park in Christmas, FL, is a restored wetland with excellent birding. Viera Wetlands in Brevard County attracts birders from around the world. Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland is known for bald eagles and wading birds.

Seasonal Highlights

Winter (November-March) brings migratory species including various waterfowl, warblers, and shorebirds. Spring and fall migration periods produce the greatest species diversity. Summer is nesting season for wading birds at rookeries including the one at Gatorland. Roseate spoonbills, wood storks, and bald eagles are year-round highlights.
