Where to See Dolphins
Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen along Florida's Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In the Indian River Lagoon on the Space Coast, dolphins are frequently spotted from shore, bridges, and boats. Tampa Bay supports a large resident dolphin population. Clearwater and St. Pete Beach area waters are excellent for dolphin sightings from shore and boat tours.
Dolphin Tours
Dolphin watching boat tours operate from Port Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Clearwater Beach, and Tampa. Tours typically last 1 to 2 hours and have high success rates for sightings. Some tours combine dolphin watching with snorkeling or shelling stops. Kayak tours in the Indian River Lagoon offer intimate dolphin encounters from a lower perspective.
Ethical Viewing
Federal law prohibits approaching wild dolphins closer than 50 yards. Responsible tour operators maintain appropriate distances and let dolphins approach boats on their own terms. Never attempt to feed, touch, or swim with wild dolphins. Dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon and Tampa Bay are accustomed to boats and frequently approach on their own.
