Toll Road Overview
Florida has one of the most extensive toll road networks in the United States. Central Florida's toll roads are operated primarily by the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) and the Florida Turnpike Enterprise. Nearly all toll plazas in Florida have converted to electronic-only collection, meaning there are no cash toll booths on most roads.
Transponder Options
SunPass is the most widely accepted transponder in Florida, usable on all toll roads statewide. E-Pass is accepted on CFX roads and is interoperable with SunPass. Both transponders can be purchased online or at retail locations. Rental car companies offer toll transponder add-ons for $5 to $15 per day, which can be expensive for longer stays.
Toll-by-Plate
Vehicles without a transponder are photographed at toll points and billed via toll-by-plate at a higher rate. Out-of-state rental cars will have the toll charges added to the rental bill plus an administrative fee. This can result in unexpectedly high charges at the end of a rental period. Purchasing a SunPass mini for about $5 and loading it online avoids these surcharges.
Group Travel Advantage
BusBrother charter bus service includes all toll costs in the quoted price, so groups never have to worry about transponders, toll-by-plate charges, or rental car toll fees. This is a significant hidden savings that many groups do not consider when comparing transportation options.
