About Interstate 4

Interstate 4 is the primary east-west highway through Central Florida, running 132 miles from Daytona Beach to Tampa. Despite being labeled an east-west interstate, I-4 actually runs mostly northeast to southwest. The highway passes through Orlando, Sanford, and Lakeland and is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the southeastern United States.

The I-4 Ultimate Project

The I-4 Ultimate project is a massive reconstruction of 21 miles of I-4 through downtown Orlando, adding express toll lanes and rebuilding interchanges. The project has been underway for several years and continues to cause lane shifts, reduced speed zones, and congestion. Travelers should expect delays and plan extra time when driving through the Orlando section of I-4.

Traffic Hotspots

The worst congestion on I-4 occurs in the Orlando metropolitan area, particularly near the I-4/SR-408 interchange downtown, the theme park corridor near exits 62 through 68, and the I-4/I-275 interchange in Tampa. Rush hour traffic from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM can double travel times through these areas.

Orlando to Tampa Segment

The drive from Orlando to Tampa covers about 85 miles and takes 75 to 90 minutes without traffic. The route passes through Lakeland and Plant City. This segment is popular with cruise passengers heading to Port Tampa Bay. BusBrother charter service from Orlando to Tampa lets your group avoid the stress of I-4 traffic entirely.

Orlando to Daytona Beach Segment

The drive from Orlando to Daytona Beach covers about 55 miles via I-4 to I-95 North, taking 50 to 70 minutes. This route passes through Sanford and DeLand. The segment is heavily used during Daytona 500 weekend, Bike Week, and spring break. BusBrother provides group transportation to Daytona Beach events.
