About Blue Spring State Park
Blue Spring State Park is located in Orange City, about 30 miles north of Orlando. The park is centered around a first-magnitude spring that pumps 104 million gallons of 72-degree water daily into the St. Johns River. The spring run is one of the most important winter refuges for the endangered Florida manatee, with hundreds gathering in the warm water from November through March.
Manatee Season
From November through March, the spring run is closed to swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding to protect the manatees. During this time, visitors view manatees from the boardwalk along the spring run. On cold days, the park can host 200 to 500 manatees. A webcam and daily manatee count are available on the park website.
Summer Activities
From April through October, the spring run opens for swimming and snorkeling in crystal-clear 72-degree water. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also available. The park has a swimming area with a sandy beach near the spring head. Rental kayaks and paddleboards are available from the park concessionaire.
Trails and Nature
Blue Spring has several hiking trails including the Pine Island Trail, a 4.5-mile loop through pine flatwoods and hardwood hammock. The park also features the Thursby House, a restored 1872 homestead. Birdwatching is excellent throughout the park, with species including bald eagles, barred owls, and pileated woodpeckers.
