Swimming with Manatees
Crystal River in Citrus County is the only place in the United States where it is legal to swim with wild manatees in their natural habitat. The warm spring-fed waters of Kings Bay and the Crystal River attract hundreds of manatees during winter months. Licensed tour operators provide guided snorkeling experiences where visitors can observe manatees up close.
Best Time to Visit
Manatee season in Crystal River runs from November through March, with peak numbers typically occurring in January and February when Gulf waters are coldest. Water temperatures in the springs remain a constant 72 degrees, attracting manatees from the cooling Gulf. Early morning tours offer the best experiences as manatees are most active at dawn.
Tour Operators and Rules
Several licensed tour operators in Crystal River provide manatee snorkeling experiences. Tours typically last 3 to 4 hours and include wetsuit rental, snorkel equipment, and boat transportation to manatee areas. Strict rules prohibit touching, chasing, or feeding manatees. Passive observation where the manatee approaches you is the standard practice.
Three Sisters Springs
Three Sisters Springs is a Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge unit that provides a boardwalk viewing area for those who prefer to observe from above. During peak season, in-water access may be restricted on busy days. The springs are incredibly clear and offer stunning views of manatees resting in the warm water.
